Working principle

When partial discharge occurs inside electrical equipment, the discharge source will radiate electromagnetic waves into the surrounding space. Although the device casing is made of grounded metal, there are still gaps at the joints and other parts. A small amount of electromagnetic waves can propagate through the gaps to the surface of the casing, generating induced currents on the surface. Due to the wave impedance of the casing, transient ground voltage will be formed on the surface of the casing. When the TEV sensor is placed on the surface of electrical equipment, the inner plate of the sensor and the outer shell of the electrical equipment form a flat capacitor. By utilizing the coupling effect of capacitance, the TEV signal can be measured.
